Job Training Available for Distribution Industry
DAYTON -- A first-of-its-kind job training is being offered for free for the unemployed through the Montgomery County Job Center.
The Miami Valley Career Technology Center has teamed with the Montgomery County Job Center to offer a free six-week training program to prepare job seekers for work in the warehouse/distribution industry.
This is an industry that has seen a lot of growth in the Miami Valley.
The training is going to help people like Charles Gamble, who's been unemployed for more than a year.
"It's been rough, stressful, really stressful," said Gamble. The training is $1,000, I didn't have to pay out of my pocket, so the fact that they are willing to make an investment in me is beyond words."
There are 20 spots in the class and it's only half filled at this time. Those who complete it will earn a Manufacturing Skills Certificate and are guaranteed an interview with one of the partnering companies. The companies involved in the partnership are Collective Brands, Caterpillar and Syncreon.
"They are physical jobs for one thing, picking and packing ... there are different kinds that are used, at the same time it's usually bringing product into one place, sorting that and then shipping it out," said Amy Leedy with the Miami Valley Career Technology Center.
The positions those companies are looking to fill pay up to $15 per hour.
"We often have a need for good candidates, our business is seasonal in nature, we're very heavy in the spring and very heavy in the fall and this class should graduate about the time we're going to have a need for several additional candidates," said Andy Matt, Director of Operations for Collective Brands.
Training begins August 5. Individuals must meet income and eligibility requirements to participate. If you are interested in signing up, call Lori Wendling at Miami Valley Career Technology Center at 937-496-6711.
