Kinnel Working Hard to Prepare to Transition from Wayne to Michigan

HUBER HEIGHTS -- It's not often that a true freshman makes an immediate impact on the football field but for Wayne's Tyree Kinnel he's working to get in peak condition to give himself a chance to do just that.
"The number one thing to remember is that everyone at Michigan was their best player in high school," athletic trainer Brett Hoffman said.
"When I did sit down and speak with coach (Jim) Harbaugh he did tell me I have a great chance of playing early so it's all up to me so I'm just training for it right now," Kinnel said.
Wayne senior Tyree Kinnel is finishing up his tenth week at the Samaritan North Athletic Performance Program (SNAPP), it's specialized training designed for the area's elite athletes.
"I feel a lot stronger, I'm getting more in shape, my speed's getting better," Kinnel said.
"It's a great process, I'm going to keep working til I leave."
Many of Dayton's finest have gone through this program and while Kinnel sees growth he's only halfway through his preparation to play football at Michigan as a freshman.
"I want to say I feel ready but I still have a long ways to go and keep working hard. More in the summer I'm going to get out in the field and do my (defensive back) work."
"Hands down every strength coach has said to me we want them in shape when they get here," Hoffman stated.
"Making sure that we do that conditioning, that extra edge of conditioning is probably the most important thing for anyone."
One wrinkle to this top flight training is Kinnel wears a mask that makes him look like something out of a comic book while he works.
"By restricting your breathing it forces you to use your diaphragm bringing in oxygen and you're able to bring in more the other thing it does is it kind of tricks your body a little bit to use the oxygen that you do have a little bit more efficiently," Hoffman explained.
This summer he'll get a chance to show how much his hard work has paid off when he competes with elite athletes from across the country.
"The process is getting there," Kinnel said.
"I think once fall camp comes I think I should be in good shape and be ready to compete with all the guys up there."

INDIANS-BLUE JAYS

TORONTO (AP) -- Jerry Sands singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Danny Salazar struck out 10 and the Cleveland Indians won their sixth straight game, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Monday night.

Salazar (12-7) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the fifth time this season and the first time since fanning 10 against Baltimore on June 6.

Bryan Shaw got two outs in the eighth and Cody Allen finished for his 28th save.

Ryan Raburn doubled home the tying run as the Indians matched their longest winning streak of the season and halted Toronto's run at four.

Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion, who was named AL player of the week after batting .391 (9 for 23) with six home runs and 17 RBIs, extended his hitting streak to 26 games with a leadoff single in the sixth.

INDIANS-SHAPIRO

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians President Mark Shapiro is leaving the club after this season to run Toronto's front office.

Shapiro has had several prominent roles in his 24 season with Cleveland. He will become the Blue Jays' next president and CEO.

Shapiro will replace Toronto CEO Paul Beeston, who is retiring.

Shapiro has been with Cleveland since 1992, when he began as an assistant in baseball operations. He spent four years as the team's minor league director and three as vice president before becoming general manager in 2001. The Indians made the playoffs twice with Shapiro calling the shots before he took over as team president in 2010.

Shapiro says the decision to leave Cleveland is difficult, and owner Paul Dolan says he will not look for a replacement.

BLUE JAYS-ANTHOPOULOS

TORONTO (AP) -- The ownership of the Toronto Blue Jays says it would "love" to keep general manager Alex Anthopoulos and has been in discussions about extending his contract.

The news comes on the day Rogers Communications announced the hiring of Cleveland Indians President Mark Shapiro to become team president. He replaces Paul Beeston, who is retiring.

Rogers spokesperson Andrea Goldstein said Monday the team would "love to extend Alex's contract" and that he "has a done a terrific job." His contract expires in October.

Goldstein says the immediate focus, however, is a strong finish to the season. Toronto leads the AL East by 1 1/2 games.

Anthopoulos acquired MVP candidate Josh Donaldson in the offseason and traded for David Price and Troy Tulowitzki before the deadline to give Toronto a chance at its first playoff spot since 1993.
