Kinnel Working Hard to Prepare to Transition from Wayne to Michigan

HUBER HEIGHTS -- It's not often that a true freshman makes an immediate impact on the football field but for Wayne's Tyree Kinnel he's working to get in peak condition to give himself a chance to do just that.
"The number one thing to remember is that everyone at Michigan was their best player in high school," athletic trainer Brett Hoffman said.
"When I did sit down and speak with coach (Jim) Harbaugh he did tell me I have a great chance of playing early so it's all up to me so I'm just training for it right now," Kinnel said.
Wayne senior Tyree Kinnel is finishing up his tenth week at the Samaritan North Athletic Performance Program (SNAPP), it's specialized training designed for the area's elite athletes.
"I feel a lot stronger, I'm getting more in shape, my speed's getting better," Kinnel said.
"It's a great process, I'm going to keep working til I leave."
Many of Dayton's finest have gone through this program and while Kinnel sees growth he's only halfway through his preparation to play football at Michigan as a freshman.
"I want to say I feel ready but I still have a long ways to go and keep working hard. More in the summer I'm going to get out in the field and do my (defensive back) work."
"Hands down every strength coach has said to me we want them in shape when they get here," Hoffman stated.
"Making sure that we do that conditioning, that extra edge of conditioning is probably the most important thing for anyone."
One wrinkle to this top flight training is Kinnel wears a mask that makes him look like something out of a comic book while he works.
"By restricting your breathing it forces you to use your diaphragm bringing in oxygen and you're able to bring in more the other thing it does is it kind of tricks your body a little bit to use the oxygen that you do have a little bit more efficiently," Hoffman explained.
This summer he'll get a chance to show how much his hard work has paid off when he competes with elite athletes from across the country.
"The process is getting there," Kinnel said.
"I think once fall camp comes I think I should be in good shape and be ready to compete with all the guys up there."

INDIANS-RAYS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Carlos Carrasco came within one strike of throwing the Cleveland Indians' first no-hitter since 1981 on Wednesday night, giving up an RBI single to Joey Butler over leaping second baseman Jason Kipnis' glove in an 8-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

For the third straight night, the Indians took a perfect game into the sixth inning against the Rays. This time, Carrasco retired the first 19 batters before walking Butler with one out in the seventh.

Washington's Max Scherzer lost his perfect game with one strike to go on June 20 but finished with a no-hitter, the second in the major leagues this season.

Carrasco walked Astrubal Cabrera leading off the ninth, then hit pinch-hitter Brandon Guyer with a pitch. Grady Sizemore, also pinch hitting, grounded into a force play and Kevin Kiermaier struck out to bring Butler to the plate with a crowd of 11,394 at Tropicana Field on its feet.

Butler lined an 0-2 pitch over Kipnis, who jumped high in the air to make an attempt at the ball and fell flat to the ground as the line drive landed cleanly in the outfield. Carrasco smiled, clapped into his glove several times and pointed at the second baseman in appreciation of his effort.

TWINS-REDS

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Johnny Cueto made his best start yet since returning from a sore elbow, allowing four hits in eight innings, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 on Wednesday to take their interleague series.

The game started 12 hours after the Twins' 8-5 win on Tuesday night following a long weather delay. Minnesota played several rested backups in the quick turnaround, with Torii Hunter among those out of the lineup.

Cincinnati took two of three in the series.

Cueto (5-5) pitched into the eighth inning for the first time in six starts since he returned from an inflamed right elbow. He struck out eight, walked one and gave up an RBI groundout to Eddie Rosario.

Aroldis Chapman retired the side in the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances.

CAVALIERS-LOVE

UNDATED (AP) -- Kevin Love is staying in Cleveland and it's going to be for the long term.

Love issued a statement through The Players Tribune on Wednesday announcing that he would be returning to Cleveland next season. A person with knowledge of the agreement tells The Associated Press that Love will get a five-year max contract worth more than $110 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details have not been released. No NBA contract can be signed until July 9.

Love came to Cleveland from Minnesota last summer in a trade that sent Andrew Wiggins to the Timberwolves.

Love injured his shoulder in the first round of the playoffs and missed the rest of the Cavaliers' run to the NBA Finals.
