Kinnel Working Hard to Prepare to Transition from Wayne to Michigan

HUBER HEIGHTS -- It's not often that a true freshman makes an immediate impact on the football field but for Wayne's Tyree Kinnel he's working to get in peak condition to give himself a chance to do just that.
"The number one thing to remember is that everyone at Michigan was their best player in high school," athletic trainer Brett Hoffman said.
"When I did sit down and speak with coach (Jim) Harbaugh he did tell me I have a great chance of playing early so it's all up to me so I'm just training for it right now," Kinnel said.
Wayne senior Tyree Kinnel is finishing up his tenth week at the Samaritan North Athletic Performance Program (SNAPP), it's specialized training designed for the area's elite athletes.
"I feel a lot stronger, I'm getting more in shape, my speed's getting better," Kinnel said.
"It's a great process, I'm going to keep working til I leave."
Many of Dayton's finest have gone through this program and while Kinnel sees growth he's only halfway through his preparation to play football at Michigan as a freshman.
"I want to say I feel ready but I still have a long ways to go and keep working hard. More in the summer I'm going to get out in the field and do my (defensive back) work."
"Hands down every strength coach has said to me we want them in shape when they get here," Hoffman stated.
"Making sure that we do that conditioning, that extra edge of conditioning is probably the most important thing for anyone."
One wrinkle to this top flight training is Kinnel wears a mask that makes him look like something out of a comic book while he works.
"By restricting your breathing it forces you to use your diaphragm bringing in oxygen and you're able to bring in more the other thing it does is it kind of tricks your body a little bit to use the oxygen that you do have a little bit more efficiently," Hoffman explained.
This summer he'll get a chance to show how much his hard work has paid off when he competes with elite athletes from across the country.
"The process is getting there," Kinnel said.
"I think once fall camp comes I think I should be in good shape and be ready to compete with all the guys up there."

BREWERS-REDS

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jason Marquis ended Cincinnati's long streak of clutch-hitting futility with a run-scoring single, and slumping Jay Bruce homered and drove in three runs on Monday night, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Reds ended a three-game losing streak by beating the worst team in the majors, one that's trying everything to get going. Manager Ron Roenicke left slumping Ryan Braun out of the lineup on Monday to change things up.

All it led to was another loss that dropped the Brewers to 4-16.

Marquis (2-1) had an RBI single during a four-run second inning that snapped the Reds' 0-for-20 streak with runners in scoring position.

REDS-BAILEY

CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Reds put starter Homer Bailey on the 15-day disabled list on Monday night with a sprained ligament in his right elbow, the same one he had surgery on last September.

Bailey was limited during spring training while he completed his comeback from surgery on the forearm where it attaches to the elbow. He made two starts, throwing 92 pitches in a 5-2 loss at St. Louis and 79 pitches in a 4-2 loss at Milwaukee.

Bailey is 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA. His next scheduled start was Thursday at Atlanta.

The Reds recalled right-hander Carlos Contreras from Triple-A Louisville. Contreras made 17 relief appearances last season, going 0-1 with a 6.52 ERA.

ROYALS-INDIANS

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Alex Gordon, Mike Moustakas and the Kansas City Royals kept AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber winless this season, beating the Cleveland Indians 6-2 Monday night.

Kluber (0-3) gave up six runs, four of them earned, and 10 hits in 6 1-3 innings. After going 18-9 last year, he hasn't won in five starts and has a 4.24 ERA.

Gordon drove in two runs, and had a go-ahead double in the sixth. Moustakas had four hits, including an RBI single in the seventh, and is 11 for 25 lifetime against Kluber.

The Indians committed a season-high three errors and have lost seven of 10.

Jason Vargas (2-1) gave up two runs in five innings.
