Marvin Lewis' Contract Extended Through 2016

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals today signed head coach Marvin Lewis to a one-year contract extension, running through the 2016 season.
Lewis in 2015 is in his 13th season, already the longest tenure by five years of any Bengals head coach. The Bengals are among only four NFL teams to have reached the playoffs each of the last four seasons and one of only five teams to have qualified in at least five of the last six seasons.
“We have worked together with Marvin for many years, things are going well for the team, and Marvin deserves credit for that,” said Bengals president Mike Brown. “The extension reflects our confidence in him and how things look to us as we move forward. We are happy to have reached this agreement.”
“I appreciate the commitment by management to the direction of our team,” Lewis said. “It’s gratifying to our coaching staff and to me personally. The stakes get higher each and every year, and the return of our players this week for the start of offseason work has stoked our fires. I’m excited to continue our pursuit of greatness and to be World Champions.”
Lewis’ 100 career victories (record 100-96-2) are the most by any Bengals head coach by a margin of 36 over Sam Wyche (64 wins in eight seasons). Cincinnati has reached double digits in wins each of the last three seasons, and the Bengals’ 31 total victories are tied for fifth in the NFL over that span.

The Bengals head coaches with the second-most years in the position have been Paul Brown (1968-75) and Wyche (1984-91), each with eight seasons. Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on Jan. 14, 2003.

HAWKS-CAVALIERS

CLEVELAND (AP) -- LeBron James shook off an atrocious shooting start and withstood Atlanta's gritty comeback to record a triple-double, and the Cleveland Cavaliers moved within one win of the NBA Finals by beating the Hawks 114-111 in overtime on Sunday night to take a 3-0 series lead.

James missed his first 10 shots, but finished with 37 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists. The Cavs needed every single one of them to hold off the top-seeded Hawks, who fought Cleveland until the final seconds despite being without injured shooter Kyle Korver and losing Al Horford, who was ejected in the first half.

James hit a 3-pointer with 36.4 seconds left to put the Cavs ahead by one, and the superstar dropped a runner with 12.8 left to make it 114-111.

Atlanta had two chances to tie it in the final seconds, but Shelvin Mack missed two 3-pointers.

HAWKS-HORFORD EJECTED

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Atlanta forward Al Horford has been ejected in the second quarter of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals for throwing an elbow at Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova.

Horford and Dellavedova got tangled on the floor while scrambling for a loose ball. As Dellavedvoa was rolling up on his right knee, Horford brought his right arm down hard to the side of the scrappy guard's head.

The officials took several minutes looking at the play on a video monitor before assessing Horford with a Flagrant 2 foul and ejecting him. He had 14 points.

It's the second time in this series Dellavedova has been involved in a loose-ball situation. While diving for a ball in Game 2, he accidentally injured Atlanta's Kyle Korver, knocking him out of the playoffs with a severely sprained ankle.

Dellavedova, too, had a run-in with Chicago's Taj Gibson in the second round.

REDS-INDIANS

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Trevor Bauer pitched into the eighth inning and the Cleveland Indians extended their winning streak to six games with a 5-2 victory over the slumping Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

Cincinnati has dropped eight in a row, its longest losing streak since 2009. The Reds have been outscored 54-19 during the streak that has dropped them to a season-worst seven games under .500 at 18-25.

Cleveland, which has won eight of 10, took advantage of three Cincinnati errors to continue its hottest stretch of the season. David Murphy, Nick Swisher and Carlos Santana each drove in a run.

Bauer (4-1) took a shutout into the seventh when Marlon Byrd hit a solo homer for the only run allowed by the right-hander in 7 2-3 innings.

Rookie Raisel Iglesias (1-1), starting in place of Johnny Cueto, allowed two runs in three innings. The Reds announced Saturday that the rookie from Cuba would replace Cueto, who has a sore right elbow.
