Marvin Lewis' Contract Extended Through 2016

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals today signed head coach Marvin Lewis to a one-year contract extension, running through the 2016 season.
Lewis in 2015 is in his 13th season, already the longest tenure by five years of any Bengals head coach. The Bengals are among only four NFL teams to have reached the playoffs each of the last four seasons and one of only five teams to have qualified in at least five of the last six seasons.
“We have worked together with Marvin for many years, things are going well for the team, and Marvin deserves credit for that,” said Bengals president Mike Brown. “The extension reflects our confidence in him and how things look to us as we move forward. We are happy to have reached this agreement.”
“I appreciate the commitment by management to the direction of our team,” Lewis said. “It’s gratifying to our coaching staff and to me personally. The stakes get higher each and every year, and the return of our players this week for the start of offseason work has stoked our fires. I’m excited to continue our pursuit of greatness and to be World Champions.”
Lewis’ 100 career victories (record 100-96-2) are the most by any Bengals head coach by a margin of 36 over Sam Wyche (64 wins in eight seasons). Cincinnati has reached double digits in wins each of the last three seasons, and the Bengals’ 31 total victories are tied for fifth in the NFL over that span.

The Bengals head coaches with the second-most years in the position have been Paul Brown (1968-75) and Wyche (1984-91), each with eight seasons. Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on Jan. 14, 2003.

REDS-PIRATES

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Marlon Byrd homered and drove in four runs, Todd Frazier belted his National League-leading ninth home run and the Cincinnati Reds handled the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 on Tuesday night.

Byrd hit a two-run shot in the third inning off Jeff Locke (2-2) and added two-run double in the ninth for the Reds. Frazier finished 2 for 5 for Cincinnati, which remained unbeaten against the Pirates this season.

Rookie Michael Lorenzen (1-1) worked six-plus innings for his first major league victory. The 23-year-old righty kept the struggling Pirates off balance, giving up one run and three hits, walking three and striking out four.

Starling Marte's solo homer in the second off Lorenzen provided all of Pittsburgh's offense. The Pirates have lost four straight and six of seven. Jeff Locke (2-2) struggled early before settling down. The Pirates have scored five runs and left 46 runners on base during their four-game slide.

INDIANS-ROYALS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer, Jason Vargas shut down the Indians for the second straight start, and the Kansas City Royals went on to beat Cleveland 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Hosmer also had an RBI triple in the eighth inning, and Alex Gordon drove in another run for the Royals, who bounced back nicely after losing two straight to Detroit over the weekend.

Vargas (3-1) only allowed two hits, one a two-run shot by Michael Brantley, over six stingy innings. He struck out five while walking two and was rarely in trouble.

Ryan Madson pitched a perfect seventh for Kansas City, but Kelvin Herrera served up a homer to Lonnie Chisenhall in the eighth, ending his streak of 105 1-3 innings without allowing one.

Herrera still handed over a lead to Wade Davis, who cruised through the ninth for his sixth save.

CAVALIERS-REGROUP

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) -- LeBron James says he may have to change his mindset and be more aggressive in Game 2 against the Chicago Bulls.

With Cleveland missing starters Kevin Love and J.R. Smith, the Cavs dropped Game 1 on Monday night. James scored 19 points and added 15 rebounds and nine assists, but he often deferred to others instead of driving to the basket and that may have to change if the Cavs intend to even the series on Wednesday night.

James says he was more aggressive on defense than on offense in the series opener. Love's absence -- he's out for the remainder of the playoffs following shoulder surgery -- may require James and All-Star guard Kyrie Irving to do more.

The Bulls carved up Cleveland's defense with pick-and-rolls, and Cavs coach David Blatt says his team was late in making adjustments. Blatt is considering lineup changes for Game 2.
