Jones, Smith Lead Gray Squad in Record-Setting Spring Game

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Cardale Jones, who guided Ohio State to three postseason wins and the national championship last season, threw two touchdown passes to Corey Smith to lead the Gray to a 17-14 win Saturday before a national spring-game record crowd of 99,391 at Ohio Stadium.
Jones also won a halftime quarterback challenge.
Defense dominated as the offenses were hampered by injuries. Erik Smith intercepted two passes and Nick Conner picked off a pass and forced a fumble for the Gray.

Many of the Buckeyes' top players did not see action because they are recovering from surgery or injuries, including tailback Ezekiel Elliott (hand), quarterbacks Braxton Miller (shoulder) and J.T. Barrett (broken ankle), wide receiver Michael Thomas (groin) and several starting linemen.Jones, Smith Lead Gray Squad in Record-Setting Spring Game

REDS-CARDINALS

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Jay Bruce homered in the second to back Anthony DeSclafani's seven innings of three-hit ball, and the Cincinnati Reds shut out the St. Louis Cardinals for the second straight night, 1-0 on Wednesday.

The Reds ended a nine-series losing streak in St. Louis and have won consecutive games at Busch Stadium for the first time since July 6 and Sept. 2, 2011. It was the first time Cincinnati won consecutive games in the same series since June 2006.

Bruce's 17th home run moved him ahead of Barry Larkin to ninth in franchise history with 199 homers.

DeSclafani (6-7) did the rest, walking three and striking out three. Aroldis Chapman collected his 21st save in 22 opportunities.

The Cardinals squandered another strong outing from John Lackey (9-6), who gave up two hits in eight innings and has posted a 1.67 ERA during his last nine outings.

CARDINALS-HOLLIDAY INJURY

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday left Wednesday night's game with the Cincinnati Reds with a right quad strain after pulling up while running to first base on a double play that ended the first inning.

It is the same injury that sidelined Holliday for 31 games earlier this season. The Cardinals announced that an update on Holliday's condition would be made Thursday.

Holliday, a seven-time All-Star, is hitting .290 with four home runs and 31 RBIs.

Holliday was replaced in the lineup by Mark Reynolds, who entered the game at first base, while Stephen Piscotty moved to left field.

ROYALS-INDIANS

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Corey Kluber took a shutout into the ninth, rookie Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer and had a career-high four RBIs, and the Indians avoided a winless homestand with a 12-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

Michael Brantley, Yan Gomes and rookie Giovanny Urshela hit solo homers for Cleveland, which had been outscored 37-10 in losing the first six games of the homestand. Michael Bourn was 4 for 5 as Cleveland had a season-high 18 hits.

Kluber (6-11) held Kansas City to five hits. The reigning Cy Young Award winner retired the first 12 batters before Eric Hosmer's leadoff double in the fifth. Alex Rios' RBI groundout in the ninth scored the Royals' only run.

BROWNS-REPORT

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Outside expectations are so low for the Browns that coach Mike Pettine joked he's seen his team picked to finish fifth in the four-team AFC North.

The Browns were the only team in their division not to make the playoffs last season, and the national perception is that Cleveland, which finished 7-9 last year, won't contend again. Pettine says he'll use the general lack of respect to motivate his players saying, "nobody wants to be disrespected."

Pettine believes the Browns made strides within their division last season, going 2-4. He pointed to wins over Pittsburgh and Cincinnati and the fact the Browns took a lead into the fourth quarter before losing twice to Baltimore.

Pettine says the Browns don't "feel like we're staring up a mountain in the division."

The Browns reported to training camp Wednesday and will have their first practice Thursday.
