Vest Signs LOI to Wright State

DAYTON -- Alan Vest, a 6-3, 175-pound guard from Chaminade-Julienne High School in Dayton, has signed a national letter of the intent to attend Wright State and play basketball for the Raiders next fall, WSU head coach Billy Donlon announced today.
Vest, son of WSU Hall of Famer Mark Vest (1984-86) and brother of former Raider standout Matt Vest (2011-14), averaged 16.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals a game this past season.  Being named the Greater Catholic League Player of the Year as a senior, he was selected to its first team as a junior when he averaged 9.8 points.
"Alan will bring a toughness, work ethic and passion that we are accustomed to seeing with the players in our program,” Donlon said.  “He will be able to play multiple positions because he has been so well coached at Chaminade-Julienne by Coach Staley.”
Under head coach Joe Staley, the Eagles advanced to the Final Four of Ohio and finished the season at 22-7, 9-1.  Also, following his senior campaign, he was named to the 2015 AP Division III All-Ohio Second Team.  Vest’s career-high 28 points came this year at Badin High School.

The Raiders signed Youngstown, OH native Mark Hughes (Ursuline High School) during the early-signing period.  The 6-3 guard was named to the 2015 AP Division III All-Ohio First Team.

BEARS-BENGALS

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Andy Dalton sneaked in for a touchdown on Cincinnati's opening drive, then came out of the game as a precaution with a sore neck on Saturday night during a 21-10 preseason victory over the Chicago Bears.

The Bengals (2-1) were looking for a lot more out of their starting offense after a three-turnover performance during a loss at Tampa Bay. Dalton threw two interceptions in that one.

He completed all six of his passes during a 16-play, 77-yard drive that consumed 9 minutes, 11 seconds. Dalton finished it with a sneak from inside the 1-yard line, and was kept on the sideline after that because his neck hurt.

Bengals quarterbacks completed their first 13 passes against the Bears (2-1), who again failed to get a touchdown out of their starting offense. Chicago's offense has managed five field goals and no touchdowns in the preseason.

ANGELS-INDIANS

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Yan Gomes' eighth-inning grand slam capped a five-run rally and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Los Angeles Angels 8-3 on Saturday night.

Gomes homered to center on the first pitch from Joe Smith (4-4) for his first career grand slam, lifting Cleveland to its fourth straight win.

Carlos Santana's RBI double broke a 3-all tie and sent Los Angeles to its seventh loss in nine games. The Angels are 2 1-2 games behind Texas for the second AL wild card.

Bryan Shaw (3-2) pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings for Cleveland.

Smith entered the game to start the eighth but didn't retire a batter, allowing five runs, four hits and an intentional walk.

The game was delayed by rain for 38 minutes in the bottom of the third.

REDS-BREWERS

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Joey Votto put the Reds ahead with a two-run home run in the ninth inning and the Cincinnati Reds came back to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 12-9 Saturday.

Trailing 9-8, Votto hit his 25th homer of the year off Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez (0-3), whose streak of 35 consecutive saves dating back to last season was broken. The Reds added two more runs when Todd Frazier, who hit his 30th homer in the fifth, scored on a passed ball and Tucker Barnhart hit an RBI single.

Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 25th save in 27 chances. J.J. Hoover (6-0) got the win.

The win ended the Red's four-game losing streak, and the team has won twice in its last 15 games.

Keyvius Sampson pitched 3 2-3 innings for Cincinnati, giving up six runs on seven hits.

Scooter Gennett tied a career high with four hits and drove in three runs for Milwaukee.

BENGALS-INJURIES

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Quarterback Andy Dalton scored on a keeper that completed Cincinnati's opening drive against the Chicago Bears on Saturday night, then left the game with a sore neck.

Dalton had players piled on top of him after his 1-yard touchdown dive. He got up and spiked the ball, then came to the sideline. The Bengals announced that he had a neck injury. Dalton walked along the sideline with his helmet off, but didn't go for treatment.

Backup AJ McCarron took over at the start of the next series for Dalton, who was 6 of 6 for 52 yards on the Bengals' 16-play touchdown drive. It was an encouraging showing for Dalton, who threw two interceptions at Tampa Bay on Monday night.
