Reds Hold on Against Cubs, DeSclafani Shines

CHICAGO (AP) -- Anthony DeSclafani threw seven scoreless innings, Joey Votto had two hits and drove in a run, and the Cincinnati Reds held on to beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Tuesday night.
DeSclafani gave up two hits while striking out five for the Reds, who evened the three-game series after dropping the opener 7-6 in 10 innings Monday night. Acquired this offseason as part of the trade that sent former ace Mat Latos to the Miami Marlins, DeSclafani (1-0) earned his first victory for Cincinnati.
DeSclafani was replaced in the eighth by former Cubs closer Kevin Gregg, who walked Matt Szczur before allowing pinch-hitter Welington Castillo's two-run home run. Gregg was replaced by Tony Cingrani, who allowed a two-out single to Anthony Rizzo and a walk to Jorge Soler before striking out Chris Coghlan to end the threat.

Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his third save.Reds Hold on Against Cubs, DeSclafani Shines

INDIANS-ANGELS

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Conor Gillaspie hit a go-ahead home run off Corey Kluber and the Los Angeles Angels snapped a six-game losing streak, beating the Cleveland Indians 5-4 Monday night.

Garrett Richards (11-8) tied a career high with 11 strikeouts in 7 2-3 innings. Huston Street got the last three outs for his 26th save in 29 attempts, and his first since becoming the 27th member of the 300-save club on July 22.

Gillaspie connected for a two-run drive in the sixth. The Angels added another run later in the inning for a 5-3 lead.

Kluber (6-12) gave up five runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings, and left with a 3.60 ERA this season.

INDIANS-KIPNIS OUT

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians have put All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis on the 15-day disabled list because of chronic inflammation in his right shoulder.

The Indians sent their leadoff hitter back to Cleveland to be examined by team doctors before the start of a series Monday night against the Los Angeles Angels.

Kipnis leads the American League with 132 hits, and is batting .326 with six home runs and 39 RBIs in 101 games.

The Indians recalled infielder Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Columbus. They also optioned left-hander Michael Roth to Triple-A and recalled lefty Kyle Crockett.

WHITE SOX-THOMPSON

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago White Sox recalled outfielder Trayce Thompson from Triple-A Charlotte before Monday night's game with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Thompson takes the roster spot of right-hander Scott Carroll, who was optioned to the minors on Sunday. The White Sox had been playing one outfielder short since J.B. Shuck (left hamstring strain) was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday.

Thompson, 24, was hitting .260 with 13 home runs, 39 runs batted in and 53 runs scored for Charlotte this season.

Thompson is the son of former NBA player Mychal Thompson, who played 13 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers. One brother, Klay, currently is a member of the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, and another, Mychal Jr., formerly played with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

His father, his brothers and his mother, Julie, were expected to attend Monday's game in anticipation of his major-league debut. Thompson wasn't in the starting lineup.

HOME RUN RECORD

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Call him the real-life Crash Davis.

Mike Hessman, an infielder for Triple-A Toledo in the Detroit Tigers' system, became the career home run leader for U.S.-based minor leagues Monday night, hitting his 433rd in the seventh inning of a game against Lehigh Valley.

Davis was the character played by Kevin Costner in the movie "Bull Durham" who set the minor league record for homers.

Hessman reached the actual mark in style, hitting a grand slam to break a tie on the career list with Buzz Arlett.

According to the Society for American Baseball Research, Hector Espino hit 484 minor league home runs, but he hit most of them in the Mexican League, which is not part of the affiliated minor league system.

The 37-year-old Hessman has played 109 games in the major leagues for Atlanta, Detroit and the New York Mets. He has not appeared in the majors since 2010. He's hit 14 homers in the majors, batting .188 overall.
