GW-GYM FLOOR

WASHINGTON (AP) -- George Washington University students will soon be walking all over the White House and the Capitol, too. The gym floor at the school's Charles E. Smith Center is getting a makeover. The new design features landmarks of Washington with the school's logo at center court. The university's basketball and volleyball teams play at the Smith Center. The school says the new court is expected to be finished in time for the fall sports season.

PLUM ISLAND SALE

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) -- It's a plum piece of island real estate -- Plum Island to be exact. Uncle Sam is selling the tiny island east of New York City. The government has used the island for a research station on dangerous animal diseases since the 1950s. One local real estate expert says development of the island could be worth tens of millions of dollars. But before the island goes to the highest bidder, the town of Southold wants to have a say. Officials are proposing to create a conservation zone covering much of the 843-acre island.

GIANT FERRIS WHEEL

ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta will soon be getting a new big wheel. The City Council is giving its OK to a downtown, 20-story Ferris wheel. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the new attraction will be called Skyview Atlanta. It could be up and running as soon as next month. A company spokesman says the rides are expected to cost about 12 bucks and last around 15 minutes.

NO CLEAN GETAWAY

NORTH PLAINFIELD, N.J. (AP) -- It's anything but a clean getaway. Authorities in northern New Jersey report three would-be crooks tried stealing a washer and dryer from the basement of a vacant house. North Plainfield police responded to reports of a suspicious van. Officers say the driver took off, with the rear doors still open. There was a dryer in the driveway and police say two suspects were carrying the washer up from the basement. All three are now charged with burglary and attempted theft.
